Bhopal court has granted CBI custody of former judge Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh as investigators continue probing the death of Twisha Sharma and examining the available evidence.
MADHYA PRADESH: Nearly two weeks after the death of Twisha Sharma, the case witnessed a major breakthrough as Sessions Judge Shobhana Bhalavi ordered five days of CBI custody for former district judge Giribala Singh and her son Samarth Singh.
The case relates to the death of Twisha Sharma, who was allegedly found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Katara Hills, Bhopal, on May 12, 2026. Following her death, her family accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to her death.
Both Giribala Singh and Samarth Singh were produced before the court under heavy security after undergoing separate medical examinations. During the court proceedings, the mother and son stood together in the accused box and were seen speaking quietly while the hearing was underway.
The CBI arrested Giribala Singh on May 28 after questioning her for more than seven hours at her residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal. After her arrest, she was taken for a medical examination before being produced before the court.
Samarth Singh had earlier been arrested by Bhopal Police from Jabalpur on May 22. According to investigators, he had remained untraceable for nearly a week after Twisha Sharma’s death. He was first produced before a Judicial Magistrate First Class court on May 23, which had granted police custody until May 29.
After taking over the investigation from the local police on the recommendation of the Madhya Pradesh Government, the CBI sought fresh custody of Samarth Singh for further interrogation. The agency informed the court that additional questioning and investigation were required to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
During the custody period, CBI officials took Samarth Singh to the Katara Hills residence where the incident allegedly occurred. A specialised forensic team from Delhi also visited the location and conducted a detailed inspection using advanced investigative tools.
Investigators spent several hours at the residence carrying out photography, videography, evidence collection, and reconstruction of events. The CBI also questioned Samarth Singh about the events that allegedly took place on the night of May 12.
The arrest of Giribala Singh came only hours after the Madhya Pradesh High Court rejected her interim bail application. Following the rejection of bail, the CBI proceeded with her arrest and later sought her custodial interrogation.
The investigation is currently underway, and the CBI is expected to continue examining forensic evidence, witness statements, and other materials collected during the inquiry. The allegations in the case are yet to be tested during trial, and the guilt or innocence of the accused will ultimately be determined by the court based on the evidence presented.
