Calling or Saving Ex-Wife’s Name on Phone as ‘Chubby’ Is Emotional Abuse: Court Fines Husband

Calling or Saving Ex-Wife’s Name on Phone as ‘Chubby’ Is Emotional Abuse: Court Fines Husband

A Turkish court fined a man for emotional abuse after he saved his ex-wife’s name as “Tombik,” meaning ‘Chubby’ and sent hurtful messages. The court held that his repeated insults and money demands amounted to emotional and economic violence.

Usak: A court in Usak, western Turkey, has fined a man for emotionally abusing his former wife after it came out during their divorce fight that he saved her phone contact name as “Tombik”, a Turkish word that means ‘Chubby’.

As reported by Gulf News, the court said that this nickname, along with many insulting and threatening messages, hurt the woman emotionally and played a major role in breaking their marriage.

The couple, who also have children, were already stuck in a very bitter divorce case. The wife told the court that her husband had constantly insulted her and made her feel small. In return, the husband accused her of cheating, but he could not show any proof.

During the hearing, the wife gave the court several messages from him, such as “Get away, I do not want to see you,” and “Let the devil see your face.” She also said he kept forcing her to give him money for his father’s surgery.

Later, an investigation proved that the husband’s cheating allegations were completely false. The man he suspected was only someone who had come to deliver a book. After looking at all the evidence, the judge said that the husband’s repeated insults, nasty comments, and money-related pressure clearly amounted to “emotional and economic violence.”

The court decided in favour of the woman, saying that the insults and behaviour badly affected her mental health. The judge ordered the husband to pay her both financial and moral compensation. The exact compensation amount has not been made public, but the case highlighted how Turkish law punishes behaviour that hurts a person’s dignity.

In Turkey, such insulting actions or words can lead to jail time of up to two years along with monetary fines.

The case quickly became viral on social media. People reacted in very different ways. Some users said that calling someone “chubby” could be a sweet or funny nickname in some relationships.

But many others supported the court, saying that repeating such insults again and again becomes harassment and emotional torture. One user even joked that they would now think twice before saving their friends’ contact numbers with funny names.
